Video loop in a mirrored room 4 x 4 m
The question of the female other and its performative gestures in relation to music derived from the punk legacy is one of the concerns in the work of Ursula Mayer. Surpassing the notion of the immediacy of the performance, Mayer’s video installations reflect on the distortions of female representation in a web of social and musical realities. In her piece, Acoustic Mirror was staged in a mirror box, where female singers in tight jumpsuits interpreted their versions of the Au Pairs song Come again. For exhibition purposes, the video-taped performance inside the mirror box was replaced with a screen where the very same performance was shown. The multiplicity of mirrored singers made viewers enter an Alice in wonderland-type universe, where the reality of the physical body could no longer be fathomed but was replaced with the desire for the physical act itself.
